Way back there in Sunday School as a teenager, I thought the New Testament was supposed to refute the foolishness of the Old Testament and finally make some sense. And, then it looked like the miracle gig started to gain a life of its own (fame has been known to wreck a well-intentioned grass-roots movement). Then politics got funky. And, finally, Paul reinvented himself and created the job of Missionary. And a bunch of weird mystics took over.
I was amazed at the book's popularity, so, thinking I'd missed something, I chose Religion as one of my undergrad majors. In those classes, I confirmed my early impressions. The Bible: a cult classic.
