Saturday Jam--The best Guitarist no one has heard of--Robin Trower

When the best classic rock guitarists of all time are discussed, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana,  and Jimmy Page are often mentioned. But what about Robin Trower? In my opinion, he is one of the very best and yet many people today have never heard of him. If you like guitar work, you will love this collection.

  1. I used to love Robin Trower and had Bridge of Sighs on an old 8 track tape! I actuually patterned my playing after him (in a fashion). If you like him you need to check out Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush. He's Robin Trower with velocity. They're both Hendrixesque.

Btw, I'm reading Gustaf Aulen now after finishing The Nature of the Atonement: Four Views, by Boyd Schreiner and others. Interesting stuff. Dave G.

  2. Dave,

Thanks. I had forgotten about Mahogany Rush. Looked up some of their stuff on Youtube. You are right Marion is good.

Look forward to your thoughts after reading those books.

  3. I think naming the 'best' guitarist is a pointless endeavour.

There are so many factors involved, and so many little known/unknown guitarists out there, in all genres ranging from jazz to death metal, that the act of naming a person is an impoverished one, because there are 10000000 guitarists out there that the person is unaware of.

    Also, there's always someone better.

And of course, the criteria will be different from person to person. For example, speed may be a consideration for fans of metal (especially so for death metal, my given genre) in addition to other factors, whereas speed may not be a factor at all for a guitarist of another genre. Some may think that sweeps are a vital aspect of a solo, while others may find them to be unimportant, or even off putting.

Terms not agreed upon and subjective assessments do not bode well for determining the 'best' at anything :)

A fine blues player known to good guitarists ( of a certain age ! )
